FACES

At the base of the skull is the occipital bone with a hole where the spinal cord links to the brain. On various mammal, fish and bird skulls I noticed the semblance of a face in the symmetry of the occipital bone. Our readiness to see faces and the importance we give that is part of our evolution beyond our human form. These drawings take a rough journey through an imagined evolution of the face suggested by fragments of bone. They raise the unsettling possibility of looking directly at the face of our distant ancestors or perhaps remembering them from within some inner archaic code. The portraits suggest the question, what might these distant ancestors recognise when gazing back at us?

Some kind of inner face,

Inner mouth,

Cave
Entrance,

Vulva
Tunnel
The face
And the way back
The way in
